L. John Doerr was born on June 29, 1951 in St Louis, MO. He is an American investor and venture capitalist at Kleiner Perkins in Menlo Park, California. He is one of five siblings and graduated from Chaminade College Preparatory School. He earned his Bachelor of Science and a Master of Electrical Engineering Degree from Rice University. He also holds a Master of Business Degree from Harvard Business School.

Doeer started at Intent Corporation in 1974, when the firm was developing the 8080 8-bit microprocessor. There he became one of Intel’s most successful sales people. He holds several patents for memory devices. In 1980, he let to take a job with Kleiner Perkins. Intel president Andrew Grove told him then, “John, venture capital, that’s not a real job. It’s like being a real estate agent.” But since joining Kleiner Perkins, he has directed the distribution of venture capital funding to some of the most successful technology companies, including Google, Macromedia, Sun Microsystems, and Amazon.

John co-founded and serves on the board of the New Schools Venture Fund, an education reform and charter public schools fund, and TechNet, a policy network of high-tech CEOs advocating education and litigation reform as well as policies for the innovation economy. He advocates for clean energy technologies and stem cell therapies. Forbes magazine has put on in the Midas list, where he is regarded as one of the top technology venture capitalists in the world. He presently serves on the boards of Google, Amyrisbiotech, Tradesy, and Synga. Doerr led Kleiner Perkins’s $150 million investment into twitter in 2012. In February 2009, John Doerr was appointed a member of the President’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board. His role there is to provide the President and his administration with advice and counsel in trying to fix America’s economic downturn. Doerr is the author of Measure What Matters, a book about goal-setting.

In 2017, related to Forbes, he was recognized as the 40th Richest In Technology. As of July 2017, Forbes ranked Doerr as the 105th richest person in the United States and the 303rd richest person in the world, with a net worth of US$ 7.5 billion as of February 16, 2018. For 2019, his net worth increased up to $7.7 billion. He is ranked 215th in the 2019 Billionaires 2019 list 56th in The Midas List: Top Tech Investors 2019.
